Overview

Night diving is a different experience—and it demands a different set of habits. In this specialty course, you learn how to plan and execute night dives with calm confidence, clear light-based communication, and reliable navigation while maintaining buoyancy and situational awareness.

This course is adults-only and taught primarily private or semi-private (1–2 students), so you get steady coaching without being rushed. We focus on practical technique: staying oriented, managing task loading, and handling entries/exits and buddy contact after dark.

By the end, you’ll be prepared to conduct night dives more safely and comfortably, with a repeatable process you can use anywhere you dive.

What You’ll Learn
  • How to plan a night dive (site assessment, briefing, route, turnaround, and contingency thinking)
  • Light handling for communication, signaling, and maintaining buddy contact
  • Navigation patterns and orientation techniques that work in low visibility and low ambient light
  • How to find and manage entry/exit points safely after dark
  • How to prevent and respond to common night-dive challenges (disorientation, separation risk, task loading)
  • Controlled descents/ascents and buoyancy discipline when visual cues are limited
  • Team procedures: spacing, positioning, and “lost buddy” prevention habits
  • Environmental awareness: minimizing impact and diving responsibly around nocturnal marine life
Why This Matters
  • Night conditions reduce visual reference points, making buoyancy, awareness, and team procedures even more important
  • Strong light communication and navigation reduce separation risk and improve overall safety
  • Better planning and controlled pacing help prevent disorientation and poor decision-making
  • Refined technique supports calmer breathing, smoother ascents, and more enjoyable dives
  • Responsible habits protect marine life and preserve the experience for everyone on the site
Course Structure
  1. Consult and planning: We review your experience, comfort level, and scheduling constraints, then select an appropriate location and approach (shore or boat, conditions permitting).
  2. Knowledge development: You complete the required learning and review night-dive procedures, planning concepts, and safety considerations.
  3. Equipment and light setup: We confirm your primary and backup lights, marker/identification approach, and a simple pre-dive checklist that works after dark.
  4. Open-water training dives: You complete three night training dives, typically across 2–3 evenings (or another schedule that fits local conditions and logistics). Each dive includes a focused objective, in-water coaching, and a debrief.
  5. Wrap-up: We consolidate what you learned into a repeatable night-dive plan you can apply on future trips.

Time planning: Many students finish across multiple evenings; exact timing varies based on conditions, site logistics, and how much coaching you want on navigation and light communication.

FAQ

How private is “private”?
Most sessions are one student. A private group is two students. This keeps the pace calm and gives you more in-water coaching time.

Do I need my own lights?
You’ll need a primary light and a backup light. You can supply your own or rent if available. We’ll confirm options and what’s appropriate for your site during the consult.

Where do the training dives happen?
We choose a location that supports safe entries/exits, straightforward navigation, and reasonable conditions after dark. Shore or boat options depend on the area and your goals.

What if I feel anxious about night diving?
That’s common. Private or semi-private training allows slower pacing, clear roles, and repetition until you feel composed and in control.

What if conditions aren’t suitable the night we planned?
Safety comes first. We may reschedule, shift to a better site, or adjust the plan based on conditions and any third-party policies.

What if skills take longer than expected?
We plan conservatively and won’t rush you. If you want additional practice dives or time, we can add sessions; extra time and third-party fees may apply.

Is all the training done at night?
The course centers on night diving, but some preparation and briefings may happen earlier to set you up for a smoother, safer dive after dark.

Do I need perfect navigation skills before I start?
No. You should be comfortable in open water and able to follow a plan, and we’ll coach you on navigation techniques specifically for night conditions.

Ready to Get Started?

Your consult is quick and practical: we’ll confirm your certification status, discuss your comfort level, choose an appropriate site, and outline exactly what gear you’ll need (and what can be rented if available). We’ll also clarify what’s included in your package and what third-party costs may apply.

If you want to experience night diving with better control, clearer communication, and a safer process you can repeat anywhere, this course is a strong next step.
