Overview
Boat diving opens access to some of the best sites in the world—but it also adds new procedures, timing, and surface awareness that shore divers may not have practiced. This course helps you dive from boats more comfortably and safely by learning how to board, gear up efficiently, follow boat etiquette, and manage entries, exits, and surface protocols with confidence.
Training is private or semi-private (1–2 students), so we can match the instruction to the type of boat you’ll actually use—small vessels, larger charter boats, or liveaboard-style operations. Successful completion earns a specialty certification focused on practical boat-diving skills and safer, smoother execution.
Next step: We’ll discuss where you plan to dive and what boat operations are available, then build a plan that fits your schedule. Schedule a Free Phone Chat
What You’ll Learn
- How different boat types affect dive procedures and safety considerations
- Boat etiquette, briefings, and how to work efficiently in tight spaces
- Gear setup and staging to reduce stress and improve readiness
- Controlled entries (as appropriate): giant stride, back roll, seated entry, and surface check procedures
- Safe exits and re-boarding techniques, including ladder procedures and gear handling
- Surface management: signaling, staying with your buddy, and maintaining awareness around a moving vessel
- Using lines when present: descent/ascent line use, tag lines, and maintaining separation from hazards
- Planning for drift or current scenarios (when applicable), including pickup procedures
Why This Matters
- Reduces risk during the highest-change moments of a boat dive: entry, descent, ascent, and exit
- Builds confidence managing equipment and timing without feeling rushed
- Improves situational awareness around ladders, lines, propellers, and surface traffic
- Supports better buddy coordination and clearer communication in real-world boat environments
- Makes your dives smoother, calmer, and easier to repeat across different operators
Course Structure
- Knowledge Development (1–2 hours total): Self-paced learning plus instructor review covering boat types, etiquette, briefings, entry/exit procedures, surface protocols, and risk awareness.
- Pre-dive briefing & logistics (30–60 minutes): We review the boat operation, site conditions, emergency procedures, and your equipment setup so you know exactly what to do and when.
- Open-water training dives (typically 2 dives, half to full day): Coached dives focused on safe boat procedures, controlled entries/exits, line use (when present), and surface management. Timing varies with boat schedule, conditions, and operator requirements.
- Debrief & next-step planning (15–30 minutes): We review what went well, refine your workflow, and build a repeatable checklist for future boat diving.

FAQ
- Is this course good if I’ve only done shore dives?
Yes. It’s built to bridge the gap between shore routines and boat procedures so you feel organized and confident. - Do I have to be “athletic” to do boat diving?
No, but you should be comfortable managing your gear and following step-by-step procedures. We tailor techniques to your comfort and the boat style. - How many dives are included?
Typically two open-water training dives, depending on the boat schedule and conditions. - What if I get anxious about entries or ladders?
That’s common. We use calm, structured practice and clear cues so you know exactly what to do at each step. - Where do the dives happen?
We choose sites that fit the skills and conditions for safe learning, based on what boat access is available. - What if conditions change?
We reschedule when conditions aren’t appropriate. Boat schedules and seas can change quickly—safety comes first. - What if skills take longer than expected?
Private instruction allows flexible pacing. If additional time or dives are needed, we’ll discuss options and any added costs up front. - Does this help with drift diving?
We can incorporate drift-related procedures when conditions and local operations make it appropriate.
